THE GREEN WEDGES: CLIMATE ADAPTATION

Juul Frost Architects have been responsible for the construction project of two climate wedges along the Amagerbanen in Copenhagen. Each wedge has a distinctive identity and transforms flood protection and rainwater management into recreational opportunities for relaxation and play.

The Garden Wedge has a consistent green character with garden trees and bushes, including apple trees, cherries, mirabelles, crab apples, and hawthorns. A varied hedge planting continues from the allotment gardens to the east, framing the different garden spaces. Here, green edge zones serve as climate adaptation with opportunities for play.

The Urban Wedge has a more urban expression: The water basins and channels are paved with hard surfaces, serving as sunken play areas and submerged volumes that invite people to relax and play with seating edges, stairs, and varied terrain or levels.

The wedges serve as fire access roads and essential passages for pedestrians and cyclists between the city and the sea for the area's many residents. They thus support the City of Copenhagen's strategy for attractive residential areas with more urban nature.
