Strategic Vision for a New Urban District in Odense

How can the transformation of an urban district challenge a mode of urban development that, in its pursuit of success, continuously reproduces itself as an internationally recognisable urban standard?

In our contribution to the ideas competition for a new urban district on the site of the former Odense University Hospital, transformation, landscapes, and everyday life become the catalysts for a new neighbourhood that evolves continuously and challenges the conventional patterns shaping the development of new urban areas today.

Alfabetbyen (The Alphabet City) questions the urban logics that are reproduced in what often become internationally recognisable city districts: density and programmed mixed use.

Rather than pursuing a city that is simply successful, but where risk and local distinctiveness are smoothed away, we propose deviation, incompleteness, and evolutionary change as the guiding principles of urban development.

The project and its principles were developed in close collaboration with Carsten Henriksen and John Pløger.
